LA MUSICA

E’ praticamente impossibile fare un elenco di tutta la musica che ascolto. Mi piace tenere le orecchie bene aperte e captare qualsiasi melodia o ritmo. Anche la musica più commerciale o quella che passa su Mtv non mi lascia indifferente: ascolto qualsiasi canzone dal primo all’ultimo secondo così poi so cosa è meglio evitare!
Diciamo che posso dividere questa pagina in tre categorie:

MUSICA CHE ASCOLTO
I CD che girano di continuo nel mio stereo sono quelli di Steve Vai e compagnia bella, Mr. Big, Toto, Audioslave, Simple Minds,
Dave Matthews Band, Primus, Metallica, Def Leppard, Queen, Coldplay, Incubus, The Police,
Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Yes, Stone Temple Pilots e chi più ne ha più ne metta.
Vi avevo avvertiti: è impossibile fare una lista perché me ne dimenticherei di sicuro qualcuno.

INFLUENZE
La mia più grande influenza musicale è senza dubbio Steve Vai.
Lo so, sono una bassista. Però Steve è più di un semplice chitarrista.
E’ un compositore che non trascura mai nessuno strumento nelle sue canzoni. Ci sono parti grandiose di batteria, di basso e di piano.
Ma quello che mi affascina di più è il suo tocco. La passione che mette in ogni nota è unica al mondo.
Mi ha fatto capire con quante sfumature diverse si possa suonare una stessa frase;
la sua musica dimostra ogni giorno che ogni strumento è una voce, un’anima che piange, grida o ride di felicità.
Non ci si può fermare alla tecnica, non serve a niente andare come treni sulla tastiera
se poi non si esprime nulla. Molto spesso una sola nota lunga, o gridata o suonata ad un volume quasi impercettibile
vale molto più di una scala sparata a mille: ti entra sottopelle, ti fa venire i brividi,
ma soprattutto ti fa capire che anche tu vuoi suonare.

BASSISTI
Prima di tutto chiariamo un punto. Avrete capito che io non ascolto solo bassisti per imparare bene a suonare.
Non basta. Ascolto chitarristi e molti, molti batteristi. Il basso mi piace pensarlo come uno strumento allo stesso tempo melodico e ritmico,
un insieme di chitarra e batteria.
Per questo mi piacciono Gregg Bissonette, Simon Phillips, Mike Mangini, Steve Smith, Carter Beauford,
Bill Bruford, Stewart Copeland e molti altri.
Per quanto riguarda i bassisti ascolto Victor Wooten, Rocco Prestia, Philip Bynoe, Stu Hamm,
Alain Caron, Stanley Clarke, Billy Sheehan, Patitucci, Massimo Moriconi, Les Claypool, Michael Manring, Jaco etc etc etc………

It is practically impossible to make a list of all the music I listen to.
I like to keep my ears always open and capture any melody or rhythm.
I even keep an eye on the most commercial music
or the one they play on Mtv: I listen to every track from the first to the last second, so that I know what I better avoid the next time!
Basically, I can divide this page in three categories:

MUSIC I LISTEN TO
The CD’s I constantly play on my stereo these days are Steve Vai & co, Toto, Mr. Big, Audioslave, Simple Minds, Dave Matthews Band, Primus,
Peter Gabriel, Queen, Coldplay, Yes, Sting, The Police, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Stone Temple Pilots, and so on.
I thought I had warned you: it’s impossible to write down a list because I’d sure forget somebody.

INFLUENCES
My biggest musical influence is no doubt Steve Vai. I know, I’m a bass player.
But Steve is much more than a simple guitar player. He’s a composer
who never neglects any instruments in his compositions.
He writes great drum parts, bass lines and piano sections.
But there’s one thing in particular that totally fascinates me and that is his touch.
The passion he puts in every single note is something unique and unbelievable.
He made me understand in how many different ways and shades you can play the same lick or theme;
his music testifies every day that each instrument is a voice, a soul crying, screaming or laughing with joy.
You cannot just stop at technique. What’s the use of flamboyant excursions on the fingerboard
if in the end you don’t communicate anything?
Very often a single long note, vibrant, or whispered almost imperceptibly is worth a million scales played at the speed of light.
It crawls under your skin, makes the hair stand on the back of your neck.
But most of all, it makes you understand that you want to play too.

BASS PLAYERS
In order to better appreciate bass players and improve myself,
I listen to a lot of drummers, and guitarists too. I like to see the bass
as a melodic and at the same time rhythmic instrument, an ensemble of guitar and drums.
For this reason I like Simon Phillips, Gregg Bissonette, Mike Mangini, Steve Smith, Carter Beauford,
Bill Bruford, Stewart Copeland, and many more.
As for bass players, well, what can I say?
Victor Wooten, Rocco Prestia, Philip Bynoe, Stu Hamm,
Alain Caron, Stanley Clarke, Billy Sheehan, Patitucci, Massimo Moriconi, Les Claypool, Michael Manring, Jaco, Steve Swallow etc etc etc…
